Summer Car Checks with Delamere Motors

Things have been quite tense in the UK recently but things seem to be looking up as summer is here and that means longer days, warmer weather and lots of exciting plans. However, if you’re planning to use your car for road trips and to drive yourself around during the warmer season it’s important to run checks. Running these checks is essential for keeping your car in good condition and making sure it’s appropriate to drive during the summer. Our team at Delamere Motors have compiled a list of these checks to help keep your car running during the hotter summer months.

Check 1 – Your car tyres

Tyres keep your car moving all year round which is why we recommend doing a visual inspection on them every two weeks. Looking over your tyres regularly will allow you to look out for any possible damage – for example, seeing glass or nails in them or maybe even bulges in the sidewall. If these damages don’t get spotted immediately this could lead to your tyres bursting or running flat in the middle of the road. We also suggest that drivers check their tyres tread depth to make sure that it meets the legal requirement of 1.6mm. You can easily check them with a 20p coin; a method recommended by most garages.

It’s also important to make sure your vehicle tyres have enough air in them as if they don’t it can increase the risk of the tyres overheating and failing. Road surfaces can be hotter in the summer so it’s best to make sure that you don’t run into any problems.

Check 2 – Windscreen wipers and screen wash

One of the downsides to summer is the extraordinary amount of bugs and creepy crawlies that make an appearance. They’re particularly fond of our windscreens, which is bad for them because they get squashed, which can alter your vision when driving on the way. To get rid of them and keep your windscreen clean, screen wash is required. Some modern cars will give you an indication when your screen wash is running low so you don’t need to keep checking. But in older cars, you’ll need to check out under the bonnet. If you’re not sure where your screen wash is located you can check your car’s manual or even Google it. However, our team at Delamere Motors will always be happy to show you, should you want an expert’s opinion.

Another thing you can look out for during the summer is your windscreen wipers. As these are on the exterior of your vehicle they can be subject to weather changes. To check your windscreen wipers you can run your finger down the edge of the blade and it should feel smooth. If it has any nicks, tears or is screeching across the windscreen, it’s likely that it’ll need replacing.

Check 3 – Fluids

Just like you on a hot day, you’ll need to make sure your car is getting enough fluids. If you’re going on any road trips this summer, it’s vital to check what’s happening underneath the bonnet before you leave. You should check that there’s enough coolant by seeing if the marking lies between the minimum and maximum markings on its bottle. You should also check your car’s oil too by using the dipstick and dipping it in and out and seeing where the residue sits between the minimum and maximum markings on the stick. There should be a warning light for your oil in your car but if you wait until that comes on your car is at a higher risk of damaging your car. It’s best to check before it becomes too late to avoid any major damage to your car and avoid a breakdown. If you’re unsure where the coolant bottle and oil are located underneath the bonnet then you can always refer to your car’s user manual or again, we can help you. These little checks and top ups can be imperative in keeping your car ticking along nicely.
