It’s not hard to realise that driving when you’re tired can be dangerous. It can be particularly stressful at different times of the year, for instance at Christmas, during the school holidays or when you’re going to visit people. But despite all of this it’s important to remain vigilant and get a good night’s sleep whenever you can. It’s recommended that you get around eight hours of sleep a night – if you don’t get that amount and you’re driving it might not be an ideal situation. 20% of accidents are a result of being tired

Fatalities, unfortunately, happen every day in the UK and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has said that 20% of accidents in the UK occur as a result of fatigue. So, what can you do to reduce your risk of being a tired driver?

Plan ahead

One way you can avoid this is by thinking ahead of time. Planning your journey ahead of time can do wonders for your organisation as you’ll know exactly where you’re going and what route to take. You can also suss out the best places to stop off to rest during your journey.

Time it right

RoSPA revealed that tired drivers who are involved in an accident are at a higher risk because they won’t have enough time to react to the situation. You’re mostly likely to fall asleep at the wheel after lunch and between 12 am and 6 am, so you should only drive during these times if it’s essential. If you decide to drive into the night we recommend taking breaks every two hours in order to keep you and everyone else on the road safe.

Sleep deprivation has been revealed to cause up to 360 deaths a year so it’s essential to always be awake and aware of your surroundings when driving. A great way to avoid this is by sharing your driving responsibilities with someone else. For example, if you’re driving with other people in the car and they’re on the car’s insurance you should do half the driving each. That way everyone gets a chance to rest and no one will feel exhausted upon arrival at your destination.

Go to plan B

If you’re driving to a social event, it’s important to plan your night out in advance. A catch-up and a cocktail can quickly turn into more so it’s best to know your limits in advance. If you don’t want responsibility it might be worth taking public transport or sharing a cab home instead. Drink driving is dangerous and is often overlooked which can sometimes result in unfortunate fatalities. To avoid this, you should always check that your blood alcohol level is safe before getting back in the driver’s seat – this can be checked by using a breathalyser. We also suggest sleeping off hangovers and stopping for coffee on the way home if you drive the next day.
